Paihia and Russell are a long way north but having visited the Waitangi Museum and Treaty Site I would have it as a must visit for anyone travelling to New Zealand. The Museum deserves a half day but will reward you with a good understanding of the relationship between the British and the Maori at the time of the treaty and on to the present day.
New Zealand is a rapidly changing country. The population is now about 4.7 million with about 70% New Zealand European, 15 % Maori, 9 % Asian and 6.9 % non-Maori Pacific Islanders. New Zealand faces other challenges now. Much like in Europe there are strong opinions on both sides as to whether or not new immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers should be welcomed. Notwithstanding the present and the future, Waitangi provides a thoughtful exposition of the past.
